I was only 17 years old when life introduced me to one of, if not the biggest lessons to impact my life. I thought I was going to be an A&R. So when the opportunity came to network and be around those who I would have considered my peers arrived, I jumped at the opportunity. This was back when myspace was EVERYTHING! A friend of mine who I had met through the Chris Brown message board had teamed up to start a fan page for an up and coming artist. I handled the content (go figure) and she did the graphics. Her coding and graphics were above average for our age, so much, that we actually caught the attention of the artists' promotional team. The artist had now teamed up and formed a group and they liked our work so much, they literally took us in as a part of the team and our page because their official pages.
I ended up becoming really good friends with the head of their promotions and a friendship outside of work developed.
We didn’t see each other often because she lived in a different state, but whenever she was in town we would always hang out- it was through hanging out with her, I met some of my closest friends to date.
One trip in town she invited me to go with her to a music studio. I had never been and I was so excited to experience that side of the music industry. I was even more impressed when I realized that she had taken me to a legit studio. We got there and the walls were covered in plaques from artists like TLC, Jermaine Dupri, Mariah Carey, Rock City. Baby, I was floored! I felt like I was finally where I was supposed to be, closer to my dreams.
She said we were coming to see her brother, who was an up and coming artist. Also, an A&R would be there who worked with one of the major labels would also be there. It was here that my life changed.
For better or for worse, that's debatable- but one thing is for sure- this day changed the trajectory of my life.
That same night, I had a seizure.
